The Immigrant (also called Broke) is a 1917 American comedy film starring Charlie Chaplin short, Tramp character as an immigrant coming to the United States, who is accused of theft in the journey across the Atlantic Ocean, and befriends a young woman on the road. It also stars Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell.

The film was written and directed by Chaplin.

According to Kevin Brownlow and David Gill’s documentary series Unknown Chaplin’s early scenes written and filmed to be held in what became the second half of the film, in which the poor bum finds a coin and goes to eat in a restaurant, not realizing that the currency has fallen from his pocket. It was not until later that Chaplin decided the reason that the Tramp was penniless was that he had just arrived by boat from Europe, and uses this concept as the basis for the first half. Purviance reportedly was forced to eat so many plates of beans during the many takes to complete the restaurant sequence (in character from another immigrant who falls in love with Charlie) that became physical illness.

The scene in which Chaplin’s character starts an immigration officer was later cited as evidence of anti-Americanism, when he was forced to leave the United States in 1952. In 1998, the immigrant was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

The Bank was Charlie Chaplin’s tenth film for Essanay Films.

Released in 1915, is a departure from the tramp character, as Charlie Chaplin plays a janitor at a bank. Edna Purveyance plays the secretary who is in love with Charlie and dreams she is in love with him. Filmed at the Majestic study of Los Angeles.

Silence There seems no evidence that this film was received differently than most of Chaplin’s early work, but today this film is often regarded as one of its most exciting efforts.
